In the forests of the Russian Far East, an inexperienced and foolhardy poacher triggers an infamous series of tiger attacks on people.
The authorities call upon the services of Yuri Trush, a specialist in tracking and eliminating tigers that have lost their fear of man.
‘Conflict Tiger’ takes Yuri’s most notorious pursuit of a ‘man-eating’ tiger as the basis for a documentary thriller.
“There are many people who don't believe this actually happened. But it was real. There are the facts”.
Yuri Trush, Conflict Tiger Unit
I wanted to make a film about the situation of people living in remote forested communities along Russia’s border with China who have lost so much since the collapse of communism.
I was researching tigers as a means of communicating their predicament to a wide audience when I came across this small but epic story.
It unfolds with the dramatic tension of a thriller but the ‘conflict’ resolves as a parable which speaks emotively of the shared destiny of man and animal.

“The production of nature films has always been a wide field and the “makers” always have rather different visions. Either they live their passion by simply watching the animals, or they press nature paradises into much too narrow film scripts or they consider their work simply as a business. Films which truly promote the preservation of nature unfortunately have become rare. A production based on a script without any flat pretensions, showing sensitive pictures filmed under difficult circumstances and with the aim to help a heavily threatened species, truly deserves this prize.”

MAN & NATURE AWARD
HORY A MESTO FILM FESTIVAL
“The Earth Award is given to the film ‘Conflict Tiger’ for its thrilling treatment and for its dramatic realisation of the situation of the Siberian Tiger in the Far East. The film shows the catastrophic results of breaking the balance between man and nature, addresses a broad range of the environmental issues in post-communist Russia, and brings us back to the basic questions of survival: who is really the hunter and who is the victim?”

BANFF INTERNATIONAL MOUNTAIN FILM FESTIVAL
“Direction, photography, editing, sound, and music are combined in this film to achieve a masterpiece. We all loved the fact that the director kept, all the way through the film, a strong and personal vision to bring us this story. Although it takes place in a small area and involves few people, it is a real parable- a metaphor showing us how fragile our link to nature is and how difficult it will be to go back to a more balanced situation.”
TRENTO FILM FESTIVAL
GRAND PRIZE 'CITTA DI TRENTO'
“Many of the messages found in all the films we viewed were encompassed in this impressive story. Always on the border of fiction and documentary, the film creates intense suspense and tension. The story is an insight into the beginning of myth and legend. Bringing in a universal code of ethics, we see why a whole ecosystem is paramount for the survival of tiger, forest, and man. The dilemma of conservation and the necessity of survival is brought forward through the trials of man and animal living in the challenging and tough environment of Siberia on the border between Russia and China. The film unintentionally but very effectively draws parallels between all men facing extreme fear while completely alone in nature. The true character of a single individual facing the power of an overwhelming natural force is revealed when his life is in the balance. By examining this, and the decision making process of whether to continue forward or retreat, we see the hunter’s similarities with the mountaineer or anyone who accepts this risk.”
GREEN FILM FESTIVAL
GRAND PRIZE & AUDIENCE AWARD
SOUTH KOREA 2006
“Conflict Tiger’ is awarded the GFFIS Grand Prize for the lasting relevance of its theme, uniqueness of the subject, visual brilliance and overall excellence. The film is an engaging portrayal of the intricacies of nature and wildlife and presents a strong case for nature and wildlife conservation. It deals with the very difficult problem of man’s intruding into animal’s habitat, exploring possible solutions, which at best seem elusive. The film possesses high cinematic qualities, excellent sense of drama and highlights the filmmaker’s own commitment.”
PLANET IN FOCUS
“A taut thriller that recalls Errol Morris’ finest work with a mesmerizing score, chilling re-enactments and candid interviews that gradually build the tension into a shattering climax.”

CERVINO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
“The Grand Prize is awarded to ‘Conflict Tiger’ for it’s innovative approach to the ancient topic of the fight for survival between man and animal, and for the way in which it addresses the ever present question of whether the extinction of wild animals will be the first step towards the extinction of Man. It also looks at the fragile balance of the Siberian region facing new challenges since the collapse of the Soviet system. It is also commended for its emotional atmosphere and for its effective use of fiction in documentary.”
